Description

An integral component of the Vision of the College of Nursing (CON) is: preparing culturally proficient nurses for leadership in health for a global society. This vision drives the academic inclusions for our undergraduate and graduate curricula. Innovative new technologies are providing convenient and cost-effective ways to deliver culturally congruent health care to patients virtually. The use of this technology and specialized telehealth equipment to provide care to patients within their own communities where social determinants of health are significant is growing. Teaching telehealth delivery methods and telepresence, grounded in theory, are critical pedagogical additions to nursing. Our current work is embedding telehealth content throughout our curricula in a seamless way such that the technology, grounded in transcultural theory, becomes an integral part of the learning for every student. Results show evidence that we achieved our initial objectives for teaching synchronous means to deliver telehealth principles and skills. We applied the best practices of telehealth technology and demonstrated early success in academically preparing nursing students. With infusion of comprehensive telehealth teaching strategies into nursing curricula, students upon graduation will have developed a cutting-edge virtual assessment skillset and the telepresence required to address social determinants of health.
